(CNA) Hiwin Technologies Corp. (上銀) Chairman Eric Chuo (卓永財) stated that machine tool industry development in Mainland China has major impact on Taiwan. Chuo also believed that Taiwan machine tool industry development could be cautiously optimistic if it improves its industries-university collaboration.
Hiwin Technologies Corp. held its shareholders’ meeting in Taichung this morning. During the media press conference afterwards, Chuo said that he feels very optimistic about Taiwan’s machine tool industry at the moment, but since the industry involves large financial investment, he does not dare to comment on next year.
Chuo said that machine tool industry development in Mainland China has great affect on Taiwan. For example, he used present versus past U.S. smartphone manufacture comparison. Before Taiwan manufactured 90 percent of the U.S. smartphones, but now Mainland China’s manufacturers supply 90 percent of them.
Chuo said key components are still being supplied by Taiwanese manufacturers, but you can see the ebb and flow of the situation.
He encouraged Taiwan machine tool industry to strengthen its industries-university collaboration. Although many machine tool manufacturers started cooperation with education institutes, there are still not enough R&D cooperation, since the key is about human resource.
Eric Chuo said the government needs to put in vigorous marketing investment effort in helping the Taiwan machine tools industry. For example, Ministry of Economic Affairs of the Executive Yuan created a great four-year global machine tools/components marketing plan.
