Manufacturers of machine tools in Taiwan have all succeeded in selling their products all over the world. Taiwan equipment are widely used by consumers from developing markets due to its high C/P value. It is also considered by many users from developed countries for its reliability and customization characteristics.
The high C/P value of a Taiwan product is a result of how it was made, from its production line, before or after service capability, and technology at hand. Although domestic demand is not as large as Germany, Japan, Mainland China, Korea, and the U.S., the small market motivates a manufacturer to work hard in order to develop world-class products from the start. As a result, these machine tools have entered into the world market successfully.
In Southern Taiwan, some companies are the front-runners in CNC vertical lathe, proud of their company structure and team work. Those companies design, manufacture, assemble, test, and even conduct final turnkey services of all their products.
One machine tool expert once said, “We specializes in cutting, so we know how to process components in different sectors and the corresponding automation mechanism.” At present, the average annual turnover of some companies in the southern Taiwan is so huge, making them very successful.

Servitization of Manufacturing

In order to keep up with competition from existing machine tool makers and emerging competitors, the Taiwanese provide TURNKEY solutions. For example, the supplier of a famous U.S.-based construction equipment manufacturer in mainland China trusts Taiwan team to design the whole production line from end to end, making it a factory that runs 24 hours. “We assign the jobs to robots. Our CNC machines are steady enough for the installed robot system, the installed automation system can thus operate for a very long period, without flaw,” stated one Taiwanese machine tool maker.
In order to cope up with global demands for super large machines, Taiwanese machine tool manufacturers are working with foreign high end companies to develop unique machine structures. Some developing projects also adopt German technology, thus it is said that in the future Taiwanese suppliers can provide large and excellent machines with 6m working table (diameter). The projects target wind farm and ship making industries. At present, some companies in Southern Taiwan has succeeded in producing vertical turning centers with Y axis that reduce workpiece upload and holder exchange, which are both time consuming.

C/P value advantage

Taiwan machine tool manufacturers have many well-known customers worldwide, such as a 130-year-old power generator manufacturer, a leading marine equipment maker from the UK, and a famous construction equipment manufacturer from the U.S. that was mentioned above. For those manufacturers, most of the applications are in the field of aerospace.
Buyers’ preference is based from the high adjustment capability of C/P values, in which it heavily relied on the control of production lines. Since many of the CNC vertical machine products are capable of performing high RPM and heavy cutting functions, Taiwanese machine makers make accurate ATC systems for different cutting assignments. In the heavy cutting field, they provides VL-66C, VL-86C, VL-100C, VL-125C, VL-160C and VL-400CM, whose swing ranges from 850 mm to 4,500 mm, for a wide array of requirements. The solid-lock tool clamping system is 4 times rigid compared to a conventional BT50 tool clamping system. This tool clamping system promises tool durability.
Regarding R&D, Taiwanese private firms also work with leading education systems in Taiwan to foster professional machine tool experts for future processing projects. In many companies, over 15% of the total employees are researchers and many of them have either MA or PhD degrees. Since future talents are the prospect of a company, Taiwanese work actively with domestic vocational systems to train their new generations who will eventually join the industry in the future. Taiwan machine makers are working hard to enhance their competence by investing on the education system and expanding their plant quality. It is said that in the near future, the local people will be equipped even more in terms of creativity and capability.
