Taiwan Machine Tools: Helping Shape Turkey’s Innovative Future

Oct. 1, 2014 | Istanbbul, Turkey– Representatives from some of Taiwan’s world-leading machine tools and accessories builders will present their latest products and innovations at the product launch on Tuesday, Oct. 14, during the MAKTEK 2014 exhibition at Istanbul’s Tüyap Fair Convention and Congress Center. This event aims to enhance the local manufacturing sectors’ competitive edge and business opportunity in Turkey. Organized by the Bureau of Foreign Trade (BOFT), Ministry of Economic Affairs, and implemented by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), the product launch will serve as a major platform to showcase the best technologies that have been driving the metalworking market forward.
Patty Yen, director of Taiwan Trade Center Istanbul, stressed that Taiwan is home to a number of cutting-edge products, including some of the most advanced industrial machinery models and machine tools on the market. The island nation offers the world an opportunity to tap into its extensive machinery industry clusters, which form an integral part of the global supply chain. Taiwan’s machinery products are geared mostly for export. Nearly 80% of the total machine tools output last year was exported to over 138 countries across the world, making Taiwan the world’s fourth largest exporter of machine tools.
Of the total lathes and turning machines rolled out in the January-December period last year, Turkey absorbed around US$236.26 million worth of such equipment. Taiwan accounted for 26.88% of the total, valuing at US$ 63.49 million. As for machining centers, Turkey imported a total of USD$254.34 million during the same period, with Taiwan supplying 35.95% of its requirements in this regard, or some US$91.43 million. Exports of machining center from Taiwan to Turkey were the 1st highest last year, whereas exports of lathes and turning machines from Taiwan to Turkey also ranked the 1st highest in the year.
In 2013, Taiwan shipped US$177.375 million worth of machine tools to Turkey, which is the 4th most important export market for Taiwan’s machine tools. From Jan. to July this year, Taiwan shipped US$92 million worth of machine tools to Turkey, representing an significant increase of 11 percent compared with that of the same period from a year ago. Industry leaders are anticipating a substantial growth this year.
Taiwan is helping solar energy plants, major semiconductor manufacturers, panel industries, multinational car makers and many others innovate and increase their competiveness through advanced machine tool products. Looking into the future, Taiwan will assume the role of a major supplier of machine tools and parts to the global market, effectively meeting increasing demand in Turkey for such machinery units.
